Soft dB’s Success in Reducing Noise from a Mechanical Press with an Effective At-Source Solution
OPD (Outillage de précision Drummond) was requiring implementation of an solution to effectively reduce the excessive noise being emitted by a mechanical press, thus improving the overall acoustic quality for its workers within the plant. Objective: To effectively reduce the excessive noise being produced by a mechanical press, by a minimum of 15dB
OPD sought out the expertise of Soft dB to provide a noise control solution, effectively reducing the excessive noise being emitted by equipment within the plant. With Soft dB's decades of knowledge and experience, a proposal was offered to the client with the recommendation of installing a customized acoustic enclosure, designed to the precise specifications of the mechanical press.
Methodology: measuring session, analysis and recommendations
- Targeted intensity and sound pressure measurements of the mecanical press.
- Detailed characterization of the various parts of the equipment, via sound modeling using specialized software developed by Soft dB.
- Evaluation, quantification and optimization of acoustic treatment recommendations.
Solution: Installation of the acoustic enclosure for the press, including acoustic tunnels for part entry and exit
To meet the client's objectives, Soft dB designed and provided installation for, a highly effective and custom-designed acoustic enclosure for the mechanical press, including acoustic tunnels allowing for part entry and exit.
Several accommodations were taken into account for the design specifications:
- Maintenance Accessibility Requirements
- Openings for parts and scrap ingress/egress
- Ventilation, equipped with silencers, providing adequate air circulation to prevent overheating of the mechanical equipment
Results: The overall noise emissions from the mechanical press showed a successful reduction of nearly 22 dB at-source, and up to 20 dBA for ambient, thus improving the overall sound quality for employees
Analysis of post-solution noise assessments, reported roughly 22 dB noise reduction at-source, with Soft dB’s acoustic enclosure in place. The ambient noise levels within the plant also experienced a reduction of up to 20 dBA (relative to positioning). These significant reductions from effective noise control, met the client’s objectives successfully, thus improving the overall sound quality for its employees within the plant.
